Far From The Dance played Cafe 1001, Brick Lane (30 January 2007)

Far From The Dance's excellent three-track EP is available here to listen to, although it doesn't quite do justice to their live set.

It's difficult to describe the huge complex sound of Far From The Dance: the dancy, electro-indie-punk-rock band originating from Huddersfield. Their sound to me at times is something like my favourite of my sister's latest Kylie, crossed on all levels with Hendrix's dirty-angry-sexy guitar psychedelia.

The difficulty had in pinning them down is complimentary to the band's talent for rendering the atmosphere in their gigs emotionally volatile. Just when they're treating you nice and letting everyone down to relax, they send the place up again with a violent and unexpected change of tone and pace. Thank goodness Alec, Adam, Nick, Jake and Thom are gentlemen enough to bring their set to a close on a slow-swelling wave of rock euphoria. These guys are great gig musicians.

Far From the Dance were headlining on 30 January 2007 at the excellent Cafe 1001 on Brick Lane. They filled the popular, laid-back venue very comfortably; in fact by the end of the set they were producing such an epic sound that I felt I could quite easily have been somewhere a lot bigger.

The band is playing at the Dublin Castle, Camden on Saturday 17 February.
